City honors 108-year-old woman
A 108-year-old woman received a proclamation and gifts during the City Council’s regular meeting Monday evening as she was recognized with that day in Rocky Mount being named in her honor.
Cassie Smith, wearing a hat, was wheeled by a police officer to the area of the council chamber in front of where Mayor Sandy Roberson and the council members conduct business during council regular meetings.
Roberson, after kneeling down by Smith’s side, proclaimed Monday as “Cassie Smith Day” and presented her with the official document of such an action.
Roberson also presented Smith with a municipal coin enclosed in a shadow box.
Roberson drew laughs after he provided her with a hat and told her, “Now, this hat is not nearly as swanky as what you’ve got on.”
The front of the hat has wording saying the wearer is an honorary deputy mayor.
